Elevating Nigeria’s Presence in the Global LNG Market

In a strategic move to fortify Nigeria’s position in both the domestic and international liquefied natural gas (LNG) markets, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently announced the signing of two landmark agreements. Unveiled during separate ceremonies at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, these agreements signify Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and the robust development of its gas resources.

International Ambitions: Floating LNG Projects with Wison Heavy Industry Co. Ltd

NNPCL inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wison Heavy Industry Co. Ltd, a prominent Chinese company, for the development of floating LNG projects in Nigeria. The focus of this collaboration is squarely on the international LNG market, reflecting Nigeria’s ambition to play a pivotal role in the global energy landscape.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, the Executive Vice President of Gas, Power & New Energy at NNPC Ltd, and Mr. Kai Xu, Managing Director of Wison Ltd, symbolizing the commitment of both entities to collaborate on charting a roadmap for project development. This endeavor aims to make significant strides in LNG production and export, contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and diversification.

Domestic Thrust: NNPC Prime LNG Ltd Partners with SDP Services

Simultaneously, NNPC Prime LNG Ltd, an arm of NNPC Trading Ltd, entered into a Supply, Installation, and Commissioning Agreement with SDP Services, an independent oil and gas company. This agreement targets the domestic LNG market, emphasizing the strategic importance of securing energy resources for Nigeria’s growing economy.

The Managing Director of NNPC Trading Ltd., Mr. Lawal Sade, and Mr. Abhinav Modi, Managing Director of SDP Services Ltd, executed the agreement. This collaboration sets the stage for a Small-Scale LNG (SSLNG) project, situated at Ajaokuta in Kogi State, Central Nigeria. The project, slated for operational readiness by December 2024, is poised to efficiently supply LNG to autogas/Compressed Natural Gas and industrial/commercial customers nationwide.

NNPC’s Vision: Gas Commercialization and Economic Impact

Expressing optimism about the impact of these agreements, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, EVP Gas, Power & New Energy, emphasized NNPC Ltd’s commitment to delivering gas to industries across Nigeria. He highlighted the pivotal role these projects play in the commercialization of Nigeria’s abundant gas resources, aligning with the national objective to generate significant foreign revenue from the country’s gas assets.

In conclusion, the signing of these pivotal agreements positions Nigeria as a key player in the global LNG market while ensuring the efficient supply of LNG to meet domestic demands. As NNPC advances its gas commercialization efforts through the floating LNG Project and the SSLNG project, the nation takes bold strides towards sustainable energy practices, economic growth, and global prominence in the LNG sector.
